Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive modality used in various healthcare settings as part of supportive treatment.
At Sunbury Chinese Medicine Clinic, PEMF therapy is incorporated as part of a holistic treatment approach tailored to your individual needs.
How PEMF Therapy Works
PEMF therapy delivers gentle electromagnetic pulses through a treatment applicator (sometimes referred to as a loop or wand). These pulses pass through the body’s tissues and interact at a cellular level.
All tissues in the body are made up of cells. Healthy cellular function plays an important role in circulation, tissue repair, and overall wellbeing.
PEMF therapy may be included in an individualised treatment plan to support normal cellular activity.
Understanding Cellular Function
Each cell in the body is surrounded by a protective membrane. This membrane regulates the movement of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products in and out of the cell.
Healthy cellular activity contributes to the normal functioning of tissues and organs throughout the body.
When cells are under stress, their normal function may be affected. Reduced cellular energy may influence how efficiently these processes occur.
PEMF therapy is used as part of a broader approach that may help support the body’s natural cellular processes.
How Can PEMF Therapy Support You?
PEMF therapy may assist with:
Recovery following physical strain
Healthy cellular function
Supporting energy levels
Healthy circulation
Supporting mental clarity
Pain management and comfort
General wellbeing
Relaxation and stress reduction
PEMF therapy can be combined with other services such as acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine as part of an individualised Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment plan.

The PEMF device is listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and is included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG 138828).
It is important to understand that Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy does not ‘cure or heal’. PEMF therapy is intended to support the body’s natural processes. Individual responses may vary.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complementary therapy. Individual results may vary. TCM is not intended to replace conventional medical advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO COME IN FOR A PEMF SESSION?
The standard protocol is to have sessions every other day for the first two weeks then have bi-weekly sessions for the consecutive two weeks. Your protocol will be set by your PEMF practitioner depending on the duration and severity of your illness.
HOW LONG DOES A PEMF SESSION TAKE?
The initial consultation takes between 45 mins to an hour. Subsequent visits usually take between 20mins-30mins depending on the nature of your condition.
HOW MANY PEMF SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
The number and frequency of treatments depends on several factors. These include the duration and severity of your current disorder. Most people feel better or notice an improvement in their condition between 1-5 sessions however we do recommend 10 sessions to completely understand how your body will respond to PAPIMI therapy. Generally the more chronic the problem, the longer it will take to get results.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS FROM USING THE PEMF DEVICE?
Generally after the first consultation one can feel slightly groggy and tired if they haven’t drank enough water. PEMF therapy may support normal cellular activity and headaches can occur if the body becomes too dehydrated. This is why we recommend patients drink at least 1.5 L of water after their first PEMF session. The treatment is pleasant, painless and non-invasive and no side effects have ever been recorded since its introduction in 1988.
